Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five in which he loved taking part in various card games when he was young. He found himself becoming very aggressive in the above-mentioned card games as he was competing against his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a bit and headed to New York to compete in some formidable chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s first two years were difficult as he would play countless hours and do not win most times. He earned some additional cash by being an runner for the poker players. He judged he could better his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He made an effort to get more sleep and focus attention even more on the game.
The actual improvement in his game happened when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest players would often challenge each other. He was able to access several of the greatest minds in chess. With their help, Howard would sharpen his cunning thinking skills. He used these strategic ideas in the game of NL hold’em.
He also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie to head out to Vegas and play in the WSOP tournaments. Annie is one of the best women players the poker world today. Howard headed to Las Vegas in 1993 and played money games for the following 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, he made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
