Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed playing different card games when he was young. He found himself getting really aggressive in these card games while competing against his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a bit and moved to New York to play some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were tough as he would play extensive hours and lost a majority of the time. He made some additional cash by becoming an runner for the poker players. He judged he could better his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He made an attempt to get more sleep and focus more on poker.
The actual improvement in his abilities happened when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest players would often challenge one another. Howard had access into a number of the best players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would hone his logical thinking techniques. He applied these strategy ideas to the game of NL hold’em.
He also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn poker. She was an excellent student of the game as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the correct decision. Howard Lederer told Annie to move out to Las Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the best women players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard moved to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and participated in money games for the successive decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
