Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he loved gambling on numerous card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming really aggressive in the above-mentioned card games as he was competing against his dad. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a bit and moved away to New York City to compete in some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were rough as he played many hours and lost most times. He earned some extra cash by being an runner for the poker players. He believed he possibly could better his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He brought about an attempt to acquire more sleep and focus more on the game.
The actual improvement in his skills began when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would often play against one another. Howard was able to access some of the foremost minds in chess. With their assistance, he would hone his logical thinking abilities. Howard used these strategy ideas in the game of No-Limit texas hold’em.
He also helped his sister Annie Duke master poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of poker as she would always be asking questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie to move out to Las Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the best women players the poker world ever. Howard headed to Vegas in 1993 and competed in cash games for the subsequent decade. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
