Everyone who competes in hold’em knows that ace/king is one of the best opening hands. But, it’s simply that, an opening hand. It is simply 2 cards of a 7-card formula. In nearly every situation, you will want to come out firing with Ace-King as your hole cards. When the flop arrives, you need to reassess your hand and consider things through before you just suppose your overcards are the strongest.

Like most other situations in hold’em, understanding your opponents will assisting you in gauging your situation when you have Ace-King and observe a flop like 9-8-2. Since you bet preflop and were called, you presume your opponent is also possessing good cards and the flop might have missed them as badly as it missed you. Your assumption will frequently be correct. Also, do not overlook that most poor bettors would not know good cards if they fall over them and possibly could have called with A-x and paired the poker table.

If your opposing player checks, you could check and observe a free card or place a bet and attempt to pick the pot up right there. If they wager, you could raise to see if they’re for real or fold. What you wish to avoid is simply calling your opponent’s wager to see what the turn brings. If any card other than and Ace or King hits, you will not know any more information than you did following the flop. Let’s say the turn shows a four and your competitor wagers one more time, what should you do? To call a wager on the flop you need to think your hand was the strongest, so you must truly believe it still is. So, you call a wager on the turn and 1 more on the river to discover that your opposing player was holding 10-8 and just a second pair after the flop. At that moment, it hits you that a raise the bet after the flop could have won the pot right there.

Ace-King is a wonderful thing to see in your hole cards. Just be certain you participate in them intelligently and they can bring you amazing happiness at the poker table.
